Guatemala Nueva Armenia Estate
Single origin, medium roast with a naturally sweet apple/pear complex flavour and a balanced body. Nueva Armenia is farm located in La Libertad, Huehuetenango, close to the Mexican border. The name was inspired in Armenia, Colombia, after the founder did a coffee tour around Armenia back in the 30’s. Nueva Armenia was founded in 1935 when getting to that area was very difficult, where coffee was transported by mules. Jorge and Javier Recinos manage Nueva Armenia, and use their coffee knowledge inherited from their father to preserve the natural biodiversity of the land while experimenting in premium coffee cultivation. In 1999, it became one of the first certified Organic farms in Guatemala. Nueva Armenia is today a fully organic farm certified by OCIA, it is also Smithsonian Bird Friendly certified.
Coffee grows under multi-tiered shade with 50 species of shade trees recorded on the farm. The farm was very recently qualified for Smithsonian Bird-Friendly status. This is significant, as the farm is quite large — 113 ha. FNA grows mostly bourbon and typica varieties, at 1200 - 1800 m.
As a family-owned farm, Finca Neuva Armenia doesn’t qualify for Fair Trade certification, which only covers small farmers that are part of a cooperative. But the Recinos family pays their workers 30% more than surrounding farms during the harvest, including even better rates at the end of the harvest when the per-person picking yield drops, in order to encourage picking for quality as opposed to quantity.
